In a discharge tube for providing a direct record of an optical image, the corresponding electron image produced by the photocathode 2 is focused and accelerated through the end window 6, formed of an electron-beam-pervious film upon a support member having a plurality of fine apertures, directly on to the recording medium 9. The photocathode is cooled by its thermally conductive support 11, which is mounted in a dewar flask 12 of liquid nitrogen, and focused and accelerated, respectively, by the coil 10 and the resistive helix 4 provided on the tube envelope. The window 6 is formed by an aluminium film 17 mounted upon a multiapertured support member 7 (and see Fig. 2, not shown). The recording medium 9 may be silver halide photographic film, a polymer, a dye stuff, or an electrostatic photographic material. For increased sensitivity, the tube may include a secondary electron emitting member 13 formed of adjacent layers of aluminium, alumina, and porous potassium chloride. In a modified arrangement, the apertures in window member 7 may be disposed in a line, across which the image is traversed by a deflection coil 18. |
