In the embodiment of Fig. 1 for measuring electrical conductivity of water the sensor comprises a body 1 of two adjacent, annular coils surrounded by rings 4 of a growth inhibiting copper alloy and intermediate rings 5 of electrically non-conductive material. The embodiment of Fig.2 is for determining the rate and direction of flow of water and comprises two mutually orthogonal resilient plates 6 built up of strips 8 of copper alloy and intermediate strips 9 of resilient material. The deformation of the plates 6 by the flow of water is evaluated by means of sensors located inside the plates for determining the rate and direction of flow.
