Contactless ignition side valve engine - has spark gap in combustion chamber facing inlet flow half-way between cylinder centre and valves

The combustion chamber (16) is intended for a compact universal combustion engine with side valve arrangement and contact-less ignition system. The spark gap (26) of the sparking plug which extends into the chamber is so arranged that it faces the flow line pattern (27) of the air-fuel mixture entering via the inlet valve (17), and lies on a line halfway between the centre (28) of the cylinder (2') and a point (29) between the inlet and exhaust (18) valves. The contact-less ignition system pref. operates through capacitor discharge giving an ignition time between 50 and 100 microseconds. The flow lines (27) are pref. at an angle of 40-50 deg. relative to the plane between the cylinder and the cylinder head.
