Novel polyene compounds of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1 and R2 denote chlorine or bromine and R3 denotes alkoxymethyl, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl or mono- or di-lower alkyl carbamoyl, and salts thereof are prepared by lengthening the side chain, containing a formyl or triarylphosphonium-methyl group in a benzene derivative appropriately substituted in the 2-, 4-, 5- and 6-position. A carboxylic acid of formula I may be esterified or converted to an amide. A carboxylic acid ester of formula I may be hydrolysed. A carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid ester of formula I can be reduced to the alcohol of formula I, wherein R3 represents hydroxymethyl. The compounds of formula I possess anti-neoplastic and tumour-inhibiting activity. |
