PURPOSE:To enhance productivity and facilitate control of reaction, by forming carbon fibers under specific conditions using fine transition metal particles produced from an evaporated gas of a transition metal compound by thermal decomposition of the gas. CONSTITUTION:A hydrocarbon source and (organic) transition metal compound from vaporizers 25 and 26 are joined in a gathering tube 27 and, together with hydrogen gas, are passed through an introduction pipe 28 and fed to a reactor 30. A heat flux from a heating part 36 of the reactor 30 is efficiently transmitted to the interior of the reactor by radiation heat transfer between mutual ceramic particles 33, which are fluidized by shearing force from gas streams. The produced vapor grown carbon fibers are then disintegrated.
