PURPOSE:To obtain a clear picture so that safe and comfortable driving can be enjoyed by performing a digital picture process on the front view of a vehicle by means of an image pickup device. CONSTITUTION:The scene of a road is inputted from optical information input means 1 and 2 provided in the front section of a car body and the picture information is stored in picture memories 3 and 4. An information processing section 5 outputs necessary information to the driver of the vehicle by using a display device and voices after recognizing a traffic sign from the picture information. By discriminating that the color distribution in a certain area is a combination of certain fixed two or three colors in addition to the recognition of the absolute hue of a certain point when the candidate of a traffic sign is selected on the basis of the hue, the recognizing accuracy can be improved. In addition, the information of a range from a close distance to a far distance is always grasped by using a zoom function and focus adjusting device and successively switching the function and device at every stage. |
