A process for the removal of nitrogenous compounds from an effluent comprising water, the process comprising treating the effluent with a first group of micro-organisms in a first stage to convert any nitrogenous compounds therein to nitrates, and subsequently treating the effluent with a second group of micro-organisms in a second stage to dissociate the nitrates and thereby release nitrogen therefrom, the pressure of the effluent in the second stage contributing to the pressure head on the effluent in the first stage.
