PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to conduct the cleaning, recovering operation of an ink discharge port without contaminating a material to be recorded by covering the port with a cap, sucking the ink via a cap by a pump, then spacing the cap from the port, and providing a predetermined stand-by time up to the start of moving a carriage from the space. SOLUTION: When the cleaning and recovering operations of a recording head 6 become necessary, a cap 18 is spaced from the ink discharge port of the head 6, set to a cap open state, and cleaned by wiping. After the ending, the cap 18 is brought into contact with the discharge port to a cap closed state, and the ink is sucked via the cap 18 by a pump 19. After the suction of the ink is finished, the cap 18 is spaced from the port, and again set to the open state. Simultaneously, when it is judged that a recording sheet 15 exists on a recording sheet passing region, a stand-by time is set. After the stand-by time is elapsed, the carriage 1 is moved the retreated position where the port is not opposed to the cap 18. |
