PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detergent composition which shows sufficiently reduced skin-irritating properties without causing reduction of detergency and gives a feeling of clean washing, which has no tackiness nor slipperiness. SOLUTION: The detergent composition is prepared by jointly incorporating one or more selected from acylcarnitines represented by formula (1) and salts thereof and one or more selected from the group consisting of anionic surface active agents and amphoteric surface active agents in a detergent base material. The effect of the invention is increased by further incorporating therein one or more nonionic surface active agents. (In the formula, R1 is a 12-23C straight- chain or branched alkyl or alkenyl group).
