PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an agitation method capable of securing the agitation conditions in a preliminary polymerization process for obtaining the required average rubber particle size in final high impact resistance polystyrene resin and suppressing the occurrence of gelatinous material formed by polymerization of monomer components. SOLUTION: A rotation shaft 2 is disposed in an agitation vessel 1 and an anchor blade 3 of U shape is fixed to the lower side of the agitation shaft 2. A helical ribbon blade 4 is further fixed to the anchor blade 3 and a baffle 6 supported by a support part 5 which is fixed to the inner wall of the agitation vessel 1 is arranged so as to be located in the middle of the agitation shaft 2 and the helical ribbon blade 4. Therein, the baffle 6 is supported so that the support position becomes variable and, therefore, the position in the middle of the agitation shaft 2 and the helical ribbon blade 4 becomes also variable.
