An object of the present invention is to prevent an increase in overall membrane electrode assembly thickness. The present invention relates to a membrane electrode assembly. The membrane electrode assembly is provided with an electrolyte membrane, a catalyst layer formed on a surface of the electrolyte membrane and including a catalyst and an ionomer, and a gas diffusion layer formed on a surface of the electrolyte membrane, this surface being on the side opposite to the catalyst layer. The catalyst layer has a first layer in contact with the electrolyte membrane and a second layer in contact with the gas diffusion layer. An ionomer amount of a first part of the first layer in contact with the electrolyte membrane is greater than an ionomer amount of a second part of the first layer in contact with the second layer. An ionomer amount of a third part of the second layer in contact with the gas diffusion layer is greater than the ionomer amount of the first part. |
