Polymeric compositions are prepared by a process wherein a monomeric material comprising at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized in an aqueous medium using a free radical forming catalyst wherein a dispersion of a solid additive in an aqueous solution of a water soluble salt of an organic acid is added to the aqueous medium before or during polymerization, the process being characterized in that a water soluble metal salt, which reacts with the salt of the organic acid to form a water insoluble salt of the metal and the organic acid, is added to the aqueous medium after addition of the dispersion, after charging the monomer and while unreacted monomer is present and prior to the separation of the polymeric material. The dispersion may be of one or more pigments and 0À001-10% by weight of this additive, based on the weight of monomeric material, may be used. The preferred water soluble salt of an organic acid is a salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing 6-22 carbon atoms, such as potassium or sodium stearate, and may be present in amounts of 0À2 to 40% by weight, based on the weight of additive. The dispersion preferably contains 10-60% by weight of the additive. Suitable water soluble metal salts are those of lead, calcium, barium, lithium or aluminium. The monomeric material is preferably vinyl chloride. In the examples vinyl chloride is polymerized, and the following dispersions and metal salts are used: (1) titania in aqueous potassium stearate, potassium oleate, sodium benzoate or sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, followed by addition of solutions of calcium, barium, lithium or aluminium chloride, (2) carbon black in potassium tallate, and carbon black in potassium stearate, treated with calcium chloride solution, (3) a blue pigment in potassium stearate, followed by addition of calcium chloride.</p>
