A method of processing bars, tubes &c. comprises advancing the work linearly and continuously past a shaving tool, wherein a chip breaker is arranged in the path of the chip coming up the face of the tool. The breaker may be integral with, or separate from, the tool. The tool may be of H.S. steel and have a negative rake angle or a rake angle of 0 to 30 degrees. The clearance angle may be negative or a land may be provided at the cutting edge. The tool may be vibrated or rotated and the work may be hardened before passing through the tool.
