An inner safety tyre 6 (Fig. 1), for use in conjunction with an outer tyre 4, is provided with a tread 14 of substantial thickness, on which the outer tyre bears in the event of deflation of the outer chamber 9. The tread (Fig. 2) comprises wide spaces 15 separated by narrow radial walls 16, the walls tapering radially outwards and the spaces, which may be oval or hexagonal in shape, varying in diameter across the tyre, being largest on the centre plane. Fig. 1 shows the inner tyre 6, with an inner tube 13, of small cross-section when uninflated (dotted lines), dividing the outer tyre cavity into chambers 8, 9 which are inflated by a single valve 10, which inflates the chamber 8 to a higher pressure than chamber 9 to hold the beads 7 of the inner tyre against those 5 of the outer tyre. Fig. 9 (not shown) illustrates an inner tyre whose edges are secured between the rim and the beads of the outer tyre, the two chambers being inflated separately. In use (Fig. 3, not shown) the flexible walls 16 are able to stand relative flexing between tyres 4, 6 without dragging on the surface of tyre 4, while holding the wall 6<SP>1</SP> of the tyre 6 away from tyre 4 to avoid its being punctured by nails which might penetrate tyre 4. Lubricant between the tyres may be provided. The tread may vary in depth (Fig. 6) across the inner tyre by having a flat wall 21, to further avoid puncturing, or the tread area may be reinforced by tougher rubber, or wire fabric beneath the tread or built into the tyre wall, or metal cups 26 (Fig. 7 and Fig. 8, not shown) may be provided in each space 15 in the tread. The rims of cups 26 may be crimped as shown or conical. |
