Transport and storage of heat-insulating tube shells utilizing a resilient mat of rock wool or glass wool is facilitated by compressing the mat 10 between a pair of jaws 18, 19, at the same time causing a sheet 12 of paper previously wrapped around the mat to fold along prearranged crease lines 15, 16, 17 to form an expandable liner on one side of the mat, while flaps 13, 14 of the sheet are glued to the opposite side of the compressed mat to prevent expansion on that side, the reverse fold 16 being stuck down by glue or glued tapes 20 for storage of the mat as a compressed flat block, subsequent cutting of the liner 12 or tapes 20 causing the mat to curl by expansion of the side having the fold 16 so as to provide a resilient tube shell of required size to fit either wholly or partially around a pipe 21, Fig. 6, to be insulated thereby. In a modification (Figs. 7-9, not shown), the mat, which is formed of a plurality of layers arranged parallel to its edges 22, 23 (upper and lower edges as shown in Fig. 4), is retained in compressed flat condition by gluing paper only on one side, or on one side and its two edges, and inserting the mat into a cardboard container to prevent expansion of the other side during storage and transport. |
