The carcass of a pneumatic tyre comprises a reinforcement consisting of a reinforcing layer of similar cords 4 and an auxiliary layer of similar parallel cords 5, both layers being anchored to the tyre beads, and the cords 4 differing from the cords 5,-the cords 4 and 5 extending diagonally across the carcass in opposite directions with respect to the midcircumferential plane, and the carcass is characterized by the feature that the collective tensile strength of the auxiliary cords 5 is substantially lower than that of the reinforcing cords 4. The parallel cords 5 are arranged in greater spaced relationship than the cords 4 as shown, for example, in Fig. 2. The difference in tensile strengths is further provided by forming the individual cords 5 of a material having a lower strength than that used for the cords 4. A breaker strip provided in the tyre tread comprises-a layer of parallel cords extending in a direction parallel to the direction of the auxiliary cords 5, together with a rubber ply in which threads are embedded in random arrangement.
