In an atomic absorption spectroscope, the sample 80 is placed in an open receptacle 40 and positioned directly in the flame of a burner. As shown, the receptacle 40 is boat-shaped and releasably mounted on a C-shaped slidable carriage 30 supported on the two parallel horizontal rod portions 25, 27 of two right-angled rods 24, 26 supported by the base of the burner. In order to produce a flame having a large cross-section as presented to the radiation beam of the spectroscope passing longitudinally of and above holder 40, the head 14 of the burner has three parallel slots extending lengthwise of the holder. In operation a liquid or solid sample 80 is placed in the holder 40, predried if liquid, by sliding the holder to adjacent the flame, and then inserted into the flame by sliding the carriage 30 towards stops 36, 38 so that the holder 40 lies above the burner head 14, the flame and holder dimensions being such that the flame curls around the holder to impinge on the sample thereby to atomize and carry the sample vapour into the radiation beam. The holder 40 which need not be boat-shaped may be formed from a metallic sheet or from a metallic or asbestos gauze. |
