Compounds of the general formula wherein R is hydrogen or a halogen; R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen, a halogen, an alkyl residue having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a XHggroup, X being an anion; the compounds being labelled with radio-active mercury, are prepared by reacting a radio-active ionic mercury compound and an excess of the fluorescein derivative. Specified compounds prepared by the process of the invention are: difluoresceinyl mercury; bis - (21,71 - dibromofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (41,51 - dibromofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (41,51 - diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (21,71 - diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury; bis - (tetrabromofluoresceinyl) mercury; and bis - (tetraiodofluoresceinyl) mercury. Each of these may be labelled with 203Hg or 197Hg.
