1,109,034. Determining surface roughness optically. EDNALITE CORPORATION. April 5, 1966 [April 9, 1965 No. 15044/66. Heading G1M. [Also in Division G2] A method of measuring the roughness of a surface comprises viewing targets along a fixed line of sight by reflection at the surface under investigation, at an angle of incidence greater than 45‹, said targets being constituted by spaced lines of different size, thickness and spacing having correspondence to varying degrees of surface roughness, and selecting that target constituted by the smallest, thinnest and closest lines that can be clearly resolved as an image after reflection at said surface, which selected target indicates the surface roughness. A plurality of targets are provided on a single plate 10 which may be rectangular or circular. This plate 10 is slidably or rotatably mounted to bring a selected target into a beam of light incident on the surface S under investigation. The targets are viewed in turn through a sighting device comprising a magnifying lens 12, the light reflected by the surface S being directed towards the lens 12 by a fixed mirror 19. |
