Flow of gas to pilot and main burners is controlled by a tapered valve plug 17, Fig. 2, loaded by a spring 23 and having a sleeve extension 17a to which is splined the actuating knob 39. A safety valve 24 which seats on the smaller end of the plug 17 and controls the gas supply thereto is joined by a lever 25 to the armature 29 of an electromagnet 27 connected to a thermocouple energized by the pilot burner, the lever being biased by a spring 30 to seat the valve 24; the latter incorporates a bore for a reset stem 33 passing through the plug 17 and attached to the knob 39. The stem 33 is associated with two springs 35, 38, the former being weaker than spring 30. The knob 39 embodies an arcuate shoulder 39a that coacts with an abutment 42, Fig. 4, to prevent axial motion of the knob relative to the plug when the latter is in the " ON " position, in which position the main burner is supplied with gas via a pressure regulator; in the " PILOT " position the shoulder 39a permits sufficient axial movement of the knob to open valve 24, Fig. 2, and reset the armature 29 within the electromagnet 27. A member 43, attached to the knob by peripheral recesses 43a, 43b, Fig. 3, is formed with two arcuate abutments 46, 47 that co-operate with part 42b, Fig. 4, of the abutment 42 in the " OFF " and " PILOT " positions of the plug, respectively. The member 43 serves the dual purpose of providing an indexing means for the plug, and retaining means for the actuating and re-setting means for the plug and safety valve as well as preventing undesirable removal of the plug. The knob 39, Fig. 2, must be depressed before it is possible to rotate the plug to and from the " OFF " position whilst the plug can be freely rotated between the " PILOT " and " ON " positions. If the plug 17 is provided with an additional position wherein it is necessary to rotate the abutment 47 over abutment 42, the knob must again be depressed. A further abutment 22a may be provided to contact opposite sides of the abutment 42 and limit the rotation of the plug.
