[Also in Division A5] The invention relates to compounds of the general formula where n is 0 or 1. Compounds claimed per se are 1,1 - bis (p - ethoxyphenyl) - 2,2 - dimethylpropane; 1,1 - bis (p - ethoxyphenyl) - 3,3 - dimethyl-n-butane. The invention also relates to the production of compounds of the general formula: in which R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy and n is 0 or 1, by reducing a compound of the general formula with sodium in liquid ammonia. Compounds of the general Formula I may also be prepared by reacting an aldehyde of a formula where n = 0 or 1 or a reactive derivative thereof with a compound of the general formula wherein R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen or lower alkyl in the presence of acids or Lewis acids as catalyst. Compounds of the general Formula IIb may be prepared by reaction of a Grignard reagent of the general formula in which halogen is bromine, chlorine or iodine with a compound of the general formula in which M is halogen alone or lower alkoxy group. |
