Polymers of olefines are made by polymerizing an olefine in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) a metal hydride or organometallic compound of a metal selected from Pb, Sn, Ge, Si, As, Sb, or Bi, (b) a halide of an element selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, V, Nb, Ta, Pa, Cr, Mo, W, or U, (c) a halide of an element selected from B, Al, Sc, Ga, Y, In, La or Tl, and (d) an amine, a heterocyclic nitrogen compound, or a quaternary ammonium salt. Specified (d) components are aniline, pyridine, di-N-propylamine, naphthylamine, N,N1-diphenyl-para-phenylene diamine, hexylamine, symmetrical diphenylguanidine, N-N1-diethylparaphenylene diamine, dimethylbenzyllauryl-, trimethylbenzyl-, dodecyltrimethyl- or octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, and tetrabutyl ammonium iodide. The exemplified (a) component is Sn(C4H9)4, the (b) component TiCl4, and the (c) component AlCl3. The olefine may be ethylene or propylene.
