Polyisobutene is made by polymerizing isobutene in a hydrocarbon solution in the presence as catalyst of aluminium ethyl dichloride, and under adiabatic conditions and with laminar flow of the reactants in the reactor. The solutions of monomer and catalyst may be cooled and mixed immediately before introduction into the reactor. The catalyst may be mixed with AlCl3. The isobutene used is generally obtained from the C4 fraction of an olefinic cracking gas by extraction with H2SO4, followed by rectification and contains minor amounts of other C2, C3 and C4 hydrocarbons. Polymers of molecular weight around 2,000,000 are obtained by effecting the polymerization at low temperatures, e.g. about -100 DEG C. The Specification includes a flow diagram of a continuous method of carrying out the process. |
