A reaction mixture containing tert-butyl alcohol and tert-butyl hydroperoxide is produced by the liquid phase oxidation of isobutane with molecular oxygen in the presence of an amount of water sufficient to maintain a concentration in the mixture below that at which the water becomes immiscible with the reaction mixture. The water is suitably added in an amount up to 6% by weight of the reaction mixture. The oxidation is generally carried out at 200-300‹ F. and at a pressure of 300-700 p.s.i.g. A suitable source of molecular oxygen is air. |
