A brake or clutch comprises inner and outer members 1, 2 between which is disposed a pair of rolling members (e.g. rollers 8 or balls) each of which is urged to a wedging position (e.g. as it approaches a cusp 12) in which it prevents relative rotation between the members 1, 2 in one direction and allows it in the other, the pair when wedged preventing relative rotation in either direction, each rolling member being selectively displaceable from its wedged position by a radially inwardly projecting finger 5 on a ring which may be split into segments 4. The rollers 8 may be urged by a spring 9 between them into their wedging positions. |
