[Also in Divisions C3, G2 and H1] A recording material comprises a sheet or web of paper or of synthetic polymer, at least one surface of which is coated with a polymer layer having a surface resistivity not more than 2 x 10" ohms per sq cm at a relative humidity of 15%, the said polymer layer consisting of a major proportion of a water-insoluble polymer containing styrene units and from 17.5 to 35 mole % of styrene sulphonic acid units, the styrene and styrene sulphonic acid units being randomly distributed in the said polymer. Specified synthetic polymer sheets or webs are cellulose triacetate, polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonates and polystyrene. The sheet or web may be provided with a known subbing layer on which the electroconductive polymer layer is coated. The polymer may also comprise 5 mole% of an alkyl acrylate. An electrophotographic recording element may be produced by applying a photoconductive layer to the electroconductive polymer layer. An electrographic recording element may be produced by applying an insulating layer to the polymer layer. The electroconductive polymer layer may serve as an antistatic layer in a photographic recording material, in which case a light-sensitive gelatin silver halide emulsion is applied to the sheet or web either on the surface opposite to the surface to which the polymer layer is applied or upon the polymer layer itself. |
