Tunnel furnace, for heating slabs and ingots, with ceramic equalizing hearth and additional underfloor heating., has an arrangement of the underfloor burners below the equalizing hearth just above the furnace floor and roughly parallel with this. Below the burners a deep channel is provided for collecting the scale at the transition from slide walls to ceramic hearth. On both sides of the scale channel there are clean-out doors arranged over the entire width of the furnace and chutes below the clean-out doors. The base of the channel slopes towards the clean-out doors. - The scale can be removed without disturbing the turbulence of the circulating hot gases. The burner positions prevent direct firing of furnace brickwork and the material being heated. - Furnace can be built wider.
