A cylindrical sensing head is passed into the ground on the end of a flexible hose under the action of its own weight whilst the soil beneath it is washed away under the action of hydraulic jots issuing from its base. A spring-loaded pin extends telescopically from the base and its free end normally lies within the soil ahead of the hydraulically excavated one such that a strain gauge on the pin senses the resistance to movement of the pin and transmits signals to recording and measuring instruments up cables in the hose.
