1,265,339. Closing envelopes; applying labels. G. BILLI & C. S.p.A. 16 Sept., 1969 [19 Sept., 1968], No. 45574/69. Headings B8C and B8F. An apparatus for closing filled envelopes (1, Fig. 1) having closure flaps (5, Fig. 1) includes a plurality of carriages 24 mounted between a pair of endless chains 26, each carriage including an envelope supporting plate 24A having a rigid edge portion 78 pivoted about a hinge 80, a pressure-plate 84 biased by a spring 86 towards the plate 24A and an extension 94 and a lever 90 both operable to raise the pressure-plate 84 against the bias of the spring 86. In operation, each envelope is filled in a semi-automatic manner by two movable arms (20, Figs. 5 and 6) stretching the envelope mouth for the insertion of a sheet (9, Fig. 2). The filled envelopes then slide down an inclined grid 22 on to the plate 24A and when in the desired position activate a micro-switch (98, Fig. 8) which initiates the drive of the chains 26. When located correctly on the plate 24A, the upper edge of the sheet (9) and the fold-line of the flap (5) are aligned with the hinge 80. Upon movement of the carriage 24 the extension 94 is moved beyond a stop 96 and the envelope retained between the plates 24A and 84. Further intermittent movement of the carriage 24 causes the edge portion 78 to engage a guide track 104 which raises the edge portion 78 to a position whereat a toggle-spring 106 is able to effect further pivoting of the edge portion 78 and hence complete the folding of the envelope closure flap (5). Self-adhesive labels 12 are applied to the folded flaps (5) by movement of a tape 102 carrying the labels across the end of a blade 100. The edge portion 78 is then pivoted back to its initial position by engagement between a fixed guide track 108 and an extension (78A, Fig. 15) of the edge portion and the action of the toggle spring 106. When the carriage 24 approaches a sprocket 74 the front end of the lever 90 contacts the sprocket hub 74A causing the release of the labelled envelope 17. |
