A composition comprises a mineral mixed with a compound that will improve (a) the grinding efficiency and (b) the pack set characteristics of the mineral, the compound having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents an aryl or substituted aryl radical, R<SP>2</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, R<SP>3</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, alkyl or aryl radical, or the formula wherein the heterocyclic ring in (II) represents a substituted or unsubstituted pyrrolidyl, pyrrolyl, morpholinyl, morpholino or piperidyl radical; and R<SP>5</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy alkyl radical, or the formula wherein Y represents a pyridyl, piperidyl, pyrimidinyl or pyrazidinyl radical, n is 1#5, and R<SP>6</SP> represents a halogen atom or a hydroxy or alkyl radical, or when n is 1, a hydrogen atom; or the reaction product of a compound of Formula (I), (II) or (IV) above with an aliphatic organic acid containing two to twenty carbon atoms such as acetic acid or an anhydride of such an acid. The composition preferably contains 0À001 to 1% by weight of the compound. A preferred additive comprises the reaction product of a mixture of 4-(2-aminoethoxy)- ethyl morpholine, 2-(4-morpholylethoxy)-ethanol and bis-2-(4-morpholinyl)-ethyl ether with acetic acid and triethanolamine. In the examples, the additives are used in the grinding of (a) phosphate rock and (b) a cement clinker with gypsum, and the minerals which may be treated include bauxite, clays, beryllium oxide, and limestone. |
