[Also in Division H2] A coupling element comprises a barrel 10 surrounded by a nut 11 each having a circumferential groove 17, 24 which together form an annular passage into which a wire 12 can be fed through a tangential hole (not shown) in the nut 11 so as to lock the members 10 and 11 against relative axial movement whilst allowing them relative rotation; the element being characterized having an opening (not shown) in the nut 11 which allows access of a tool (shown dotted at 33) into the groove 17 of the barrel whilst still permitting relative rotation of the members 10 and 11. Three spring-loaded detent balls trapped at 30 in bores 26 on the inner side of the nut 11 engage in notches 18 cut around an enlarged portion of the barrel; one of these notches provides an axial access 19, 20 to allow the tool to extend across the groove 17. The wire 12 has, near to its rounded end, a notch 33 to admit the tool (as shown dotted). To assemble the wire in the element its notched end is inserted into the tangential hole and it is looked in position by inserting the tool into the access notch 19, 20 as well as its own notch 33, drawing it into the annular passage by rotating the nut on the barrel, cutting off the excess wire flush with the nut and withdrawing the tool. The wire can afterwards be removed by re-inserting the tool and rotating in the reverse direction. The coupling element forms part of an electrical connector described in Application No. 35201/52 in which the barrel 10 incorporates insulating material with contact pins embedded and screw threads are provided on the nut 11 for the purpose of attaching it to another element. The barrel 10 also has a split skirt 13 and a screw thread at 15 in connection with the same purpose. |
