[Also in Division F2] Tube forming and coating apparatus comprises a stationary canti-lever arbor 16, an endless belt 20, Fig. 2 (not shown), for continuously helically winding one or more paper webs 14 with abutting or overlapping side edges about the arbor to form a tube 12 and to advance said tube beyond the free end of the arbor, and tube-coating means 10 mounted on said arbor free end for interiorly coating the tube as it advances. The tube-coating means includes an inflatable doctor or wiper 28 that is mounted on a hub 40 secured to the arbor end and is spaced from said end to define a reservoir 30. Coating material, such as plastics, is fed by a pump 58, which includes filter means, through a conduit 56 extending through the arbor into a circumferential groove 34 in an application ring 26, and then passed the periphery of the ring flange 38 to the reservoir. Return flow conduits 60, 62 are also provided. Thus coating material in the reservoir is both maintained in contact with the tube inner surface and recirculated through filter means. The application ring is not essential and may be dispensed with. A conduit 64 supplies pressurised air under control of valves 66, 68 to inflate the wiper to the desired pressure and thereby control the thickness of the coating. A further conduit 72 supplies a stream of drying air, which may be preheated, to the interior of the coated tube. |
