1291454 Applying container closures; feeding sheets BENZ & HILGERS GmbH 13 Oct 1969 [29 Nov 1968] 50109/69 Headings B8R and B8T A cover disc 2 for a container 44 is fed from a magazine 1 and held by suction on the head 21 of one of at least two plungers 18 which rotate continuously to carry the disc to a station where the plunger is extended to locate the disc on a container 44. A polygonal rotary head, 17 mounts shanks 19 to each of which is attached a member 22 by means of a bearing 20. The member 22 has a roller 24 running in a guide track 29. The plunger 18 can reciprocate upon member 22 and has a roller 25 running in a second guide track 30. Discs 2 are fed from the magazine 1 by a suction member 3 and transferred by rollers 4 to a support frame 6 which is reciprocated vertically by a rod 14, also causing a horizontal reciprocation under the action of a stationary cam 13 upon a follower 12 attached to the frame 6. In the region of the frame 6 the profiles of the two guide tracks 29, 30, are such as to rotate the member 22 relative to shank 19 and cause the plunger head 21 to remain vertical for a short period as it travels downwards. During this period the support frame 6 is moving as described above to bring a disc 2 into close proximity to the plunger head 21 and keep the disc and head stationary relative to each other while suction is applied through annular slot 27 and passage 26 causing the disc to adhere to the plunger head. The outer guide track 30 is interrupted at 31 where the plunger 18 is extended downwardly by a lever 32 actuated by a rod 34 reciprocating vertically against a spring 35. The rod 34 is operated by links 36 and 39 which pivot about 37 under the action of a rotary cam 38. While the plunger 18 is being extended a conveyer 46 brings a container 44 into position to receive a disc. The plunger is then retracted, passage 26 having come out of communication with suction slot 27 in order to release the disc. Should the plunger fail to pick up a disc at the frame 6, the fact is detected by a photo-electric device 41 which sends an electrical pulse along circuit 42 to energize an electromagnet 43 which locks the plunger 18 in the retracted position by means of a lever 39a attached to the plunger extending mechanism. The machine may also be used for applying caps to the containers. |
