Utilizing spent sulphite lye is effected by adding to heated neutralized sulphite lyes containing nutrient salts such amounts of yeast-free run-off from yeast separation that a reducible substance concentration of 2-3% results, and fermenting nutrient solution in aeration apparatus at pH 4.8-5.1.
