Coating materials are stripped from the bases of photographic films and plates by (1) continuously feeding the film or plate through a first bath containing an alcoholic solution of an alkali-metal carbonate and an alkali-metal hypochlorite, (2) washing in a second bath containing alkali-metal sulphite solution, and optionally (3) rinsing with water, (4) dehydrating (e.g. with methanol or ethanol) and (5) drying. Preferably the base is of a cellulosic material, between steps (3) and (4) is passed through a bath containing acetone dioxane and/or methyl ethyl ketone, optionally mixed with aqueous alcohol or ethyl acetate. |
