A pneumatic tyre has a portion 58 of each sidewall extending substantially parallel to the axis of rotation and being stiffened, to resist lateral flexing whilst allowing radially-inward flexing, by a stabilizing band 15 which may be located adjacent to, or be adhered wholly or partly to the interior surface of each sidewall or be incorporated within each sidewall and which extends from a point axially inwardly of the rim flange engaging surface of the respective head to a point axially outwardly of said surface. The band may comprise hard, high modulus rubber strip and/or parallel ends and is substantially inextensible. More than one layer may be provided. A ring 48, of, e.g. foamed or porous aluminium, with an elastomeric tread 54 may be seated in the wheel rim to allow the tyre to run deflated. |
