1,262,527. Projectiles; firearm barrels. COLT'S Inc. 31 March, 1969, No. 16733/69. Headings F3A and F3C. A projectile for squeezebore firearms comprises a plurality of sub-projectiles 2, 3, 4 and 5 with annular cavities 14, 19 and 20 between each of the projectiles, each of the cavities containing a readily deformable material, the resistance to compression of which creates a reaction force which separates the sub-projectiles as the flanges 15 are deformed inwardly owing to passage of the projectile through the squeezebore of the firearm. The sub-projectiles are bonded together by P.T.F.E. or a lead alloy which acts as a lubricant after separation. The points of the projectiles may be flame hardened. The deformable material in cavity 14 is constituted by air and is supplemented by propellant gases entering through a passage 16 which is nipped shut in the squeezebore. Wax fills the cavity 19, and the cavity 20 contains air and a propellant charge 21. Compression of the air in cavity 20 causes ignition of the propellant charge, thus facilitating separation. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), each of the sub-projectiles includes a cylindrical flange (30) and a hardened core (34). The firearm comprises a rifled portion 17 leading on to tapered smooth and cylindrical portions. |
