A gun comprises a tubular barrel 10 of which the ends are initially sealed by disruptable closure members 17, 18, means 50 for withdrawing air from the barrel and means for disrupting one of the closure members whereby a projectile 26 fitting slidably within the barrel is accelerated towards and through the other closure member and out of the barrel. The disruptable closure members 17, 18 may be thin membranes of synthetic plastics material and the means for disrupting a closure member comprises a ring 21 carrying at its periphery a plurality of blades 22. In the construction shown the ring 21 is provided with a plurality of guide pins 23 which co-operate with inclined slots in the collar 20 of a closure member clamping member 19. Rotation of the ring 21 by a solenoid actuator (Fig. 3, not shown) drives the blades towards and through the closure member 18. Closure member clamping rings may be screwed on to the barrel (Fig. 4, not shown) or be secured by fluid pressure means. The barrel may be extended by a further tube having a restricted outlet at the end opposite the barrel such that a projectile may be brought to rest in the further tube (Fig. 5, not shown). The projectile 26 is mounted in a sabot 27 of a low density material such as expanded polyurethene or wooden materials, through a load distributing plate 2 and two radial supports 30, 31. To separate the projectile from the sabot 27 a separator 32 is mounted adjacent the muzzle of the gun. The projectile may be in three parts, the device to be tested at the forward end thereof, a main body portion and a collapsible structure interposed therebetween. The main body may be connected to the firing point by an electrical cable (Fig. 6, not shown) or the main body may house a tape recorder (Fig. 8, not shown) or a transmitter (Fig. 7, not shown). |
