1,137,082. Delayed coking process. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 21 Jan., 1966 [25 Jan., 1965], No. 2758/66. Heading C5E. A method of producing coke of low S and V content comprises feeding to a delayed coker a pyrolysis fuel oil fraction, i.e. a fraction obtained by thermally cracking a petroleum distillate in a tubular furnace with a diluent gas such as steam or methane, at 650 ‹to 800‹ C. The fuel oil has a high content of high molecular weight (above 250) polycyclic hydrocarbons, and a B.P. above 315‹ C. and is preferably rendered anhydrous (by distillation) before being passed to the cover. The resultant coke is calcined, e.g. at 1350‹ C., for making graphite electrodes. |
