1304594 Acousto-optic devices WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 29 April 1970 [5 May 1969] 20560/70 Heading H4F An acousto-optic diffraction device, e.g. a light deflector or intensity modulator, comprise an insoluble crystalline body with a composition corresponding to (Tl 2 O) x .B or (PbO) y B or mixtures thereof, where B is Re 2 O 7 (x=y=1); or M<SP>VI</SP>O 3 (M<SP>VI</SP> is W, Mo, S, Se, or Te, x=1, y=1 or 2); or M<SP>V</SP> 2 O 5 (M<SP>V</SP> is P, As, Sb, V, Nb, Ta, x=1, 2 or 3, y=1-8); or M<SP>IV</SP>O 2 (M<SP>IV</SP> is Si, Ge or S, x=1-3, y=1-8); or M<SP>III</SP> 2 O 3 (M<SP>III</SP> is B or Bi, x= 1-3, y=1-8). Apart from the material used, the embodiments are identical to those described in Specification 38217/69 and constructional details of a light deflector are also described and illustrated. Preferred materials are PbMoO 4 , PbWO 4 and mixtures thereof, and Pb 2 MoO 5 , Pb 2 WO 5 and mixtures thereof. At least the first two of these materials may be used in devices wherein the magnitude of the acousto-optic interaction is required to be independent of the optical polarization state, by passing the optical and elastic waves along the a and c axes respectively. |
