A process for the production of alkenyl and cycloalkenyl isocyanates which contain at least once in their molecule the grouping of the formula and may be substituted by halogen atoms and/or aryl groups, comprises heating the corresponding alkenyl or cycloalkenyl halides containing at least one grouping of the formula with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cyanates in the presence of copper powder and/or copper(1) halides in solvent mixtures consisting of 1 to 80% by weight of a dipolar aprotic solvent and of 99 to 20% by weight of an inert organic solvent.
