<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for initializing a phase change type optical disk that can reduce a time for initializing process so as to enhance the productivity of disks, uniformly initialize the disk so as to reduce unevenness of a reflective index, and enhance the recording characteristic, and in particular reduce deterioration in the signal quality due to direct overwrite, and to provide a method for initializing the optical disk. <P>SOLUTION: This invention provides the initializing method for a manufacturing process of the phase change type optical disk wherein information is recorded or erased by emitting a laser beam to a recording layer formed on a disk substrate so as to generate a reversible phase change between an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase. When the optical disk is rotated at a constant line velocity and the laser beam is emitted to the rotated optical disk to initialize it, a plurality of the laser beam spots each having a spot shape long in the track direction and the vertical direction of the optical disk are located in series in the track direction of the optical disk so that their interval becomes 20 μm or over and 100 μm or below. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
