[Also in Division G2] Flat flexible articles which are easily damaged during transportation e.g. films, bank documents, transparencies, oil paintings, and in particular undeveloped X-ray films, are packaged between a pair of non-transparent flexible sheets 14 attached to and wound around the spool 7 of a cassette 4, which may then be conveyed within a pneumatic post conveyer. For loading, the cassette is located in a trough shaped depression adjacent a flat surface 2 on to which the sheets 14 are manually drawn, by sheet tongues 15, through a longitudinal slit 6 of the cassette 4. The tongue 15 of the upper sheet 14 is conveniently lug shaped whereby it engages the slit 6 and is retained thereby when the sheets 14 are wound into the cassette. In the Fig. 3 embodiment, the spool 7 is mounted, by circlip 9, within support rings 8 of the cassette 4, and the sheets 14 enclosing an X-ray film are wound within a dark room into the cassette 4, when this is displaced in the direction 13 whereby the end of the spool 7 contacts a frictional drive cone 12 of an electric motor 11. In the Fig. 5 embodiment (not shown) the motor drive is automatically commenced by displacement of the cassette 4 over a push button (18) in the base of the trough shaped depression, the drive being transmitted to a spool drive wheel (20) which projects out of the cassette (4) to frictionally engage the upper circumference of a driven mating wheel (2), and which engagement is enhanced if the base of the trough shaped depression comprises elastic material which is yieldable under pressure applied to the cassette 4. In the Fig. 6 embodiment (not shown), the spool (7) engages at one end over a cassette spigot (23) and a coil spring (25) extends through the hollow spool (7) and is attached between the spigot (23) and the opposite end of the spool (7), whereby the sheets (14) are drawn out of the cassette against the tension of the spring (25) which then acts to wind the loaded sheets (14) back into the cassette. In this embodiment, the tongues 15 are either apertured for engagement over a hook 27 on the surface 2, or are secured to the surface 2 by adhesive means during location of the sheets 14.</p> |
