<p>The plant is incorporated into the general furnace design. Basically it makes use of three chambers all of which are or can be made gas tight and to which pressure can be applied. The first is connected to the second only at the bottom and the second to the third from the bottom of the second to the top of the third, the tapping hole of the third also being near the top. Use is made of the hydraulic relationship in two arms of U-tubes for effecting transfer of metal from one chamber to the next, including displacement of liquid metal by refractory blocks, and by gas pressure applied above the liquid metal level. The volume of metal in the casting chamber is determined either by weight or by measuring its volume by means of electrodes introduced from the top, which close a circuit when making contact with the level of the metal.</p> |
