1,147,352. Machine tool details. OWENSILLINOIS Inc. 12 April, 1966 [12 April, 1965], No. 15822/66. Headings B3B and B3C. A machine for facing the end faces of the necks 21 of plastics bottles, comprises a conveyer 13 which feeds the bottles 16 up to a gate 39, 40, where they are released individually, correctly orientated, and then moved transversely to be faced by a rotating cutter 194. The bottles are confined by rails 18, 20 and gate 39, 40 is pivoted so as to release a bottle by an air or hydraulic cylinder 27. The bottle is stopped by the piston rod 50 of a cylinder 52, and is engaged by a fixture 70, which orientates the bottle about its own axis, and moves it into axial alignment with cutter 194. The fixture comprises saddles 110, 140 actuated by cylinders 56, 58, as so to clamp the bottle, stops 104, 134, which locate the bottle handle 22 in the required position, and locators 94, 120, which have grooves corresponding to screw threads on the neck of the bottle, so that the end face of the neck will be machined, using the screw threads as a datum, instead of the body of the bottle. The work table 150 may be fixed or vertically movable, and cutter 194 is rotated by an electric motor 176, through a belt drive 178, 180, 182, 184. The cutter is vertically movable on a column 160 by a cylinder 188, and this movement is limited by a stop 199. The cuttings are removed by air blown through shaft 186, and a vacuum hose 196. Limit switch LS-1, LS-2, LS-4 and LS-5 are provided in the electric operating circuit for respectively indicating the existence of a bottle backlog, indicating that the cutter is in the down position, signalling when a downstream jam exists, and indicating when a bottle is properly positioned. |
