Method and apparatus for converting color-coded information into binary coded information and checking the latter against itself and/or a reference code, the original information being coded in the primary colors red, green and blue and the complementary colors cyan, magenta and yellow. By the conversion there is produced a first supplemental signal each time a primary color is detected and a second supplemental signal each time a complementary color is detected. The first and second supplemental signals are utilized to check the binary coded information converted from the color-coded original information.
