Carbon tetrachloride is prepared by reaction of coal tar or lignite tar, or distillation products and residues thereof, or petroleum distillation residues, or mixtures thereof, with chlorine at 50-800‹ C. and 50 to 700 atmg. Distillation products and residues specified are naphthalene oil, tar oils, anthracene oil, anthracene residues, tar pitch, bitumen, asphalt, mineral wax, naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthrene, pyrene, acenaphthylene, fluorene, chrysene, anthracene, carbazole and methyl naphthalene. Tubular reactors with nickel linings are preferred. The reagents may be passed through a first pre-reaction zone, optionally containing a chlorinated organic liquid, e.g. hexachlorobenzene or hexachloroethane, before introduction into the hotter main reaction zone. The process may be continuous or discontinuous. Unreacted chlorine and hexachlorobenzene and hexachloroethane intermediate products are recycled.</p> |
