<p>1276271 Polymers containing polymerized emulsifying agents STANDARD BRANDS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 4 June 1970 [26 June 1969] 27085/70 Headings C3P C3Q and C3R A copolymer is made by the acid aqueous emulsion polymerization of a mixture of 20- 55% by weight of methacrylic acid, part of which may be replaced by another carboxylic monomer, 3-35% by weight of an ester of an ethylenically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid anhydride and a polyoxyethylated alcohol or phenol, and at least 35% by weight of styrene and/or butadiene, optionally with a minor amount of a further monomer. The esters exemplified are of maleic anhydride and polyoxyethylated alkyl phenols. A dispersion or solution of the polymer may be added to a latex, e.g. of natural rubber, neoprene, carboxylic latex, SBR, or acrylic polymer, and the pH is made alkaline so as to cause in situ thickening of the latex. The emulsion may also be used as a dispersing agent in a printing paste or ink comprising pigment, solvent, surfactant, and butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin or carboxylated nitrile rubber. Esters of alkyl and dialkyl phenoxy polyethyleneoxy ethanols and maleic anhydride are prepared by heating the reactants in bulk in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor.</p> |
