1394588 Gas generating candles; gas-generating and igniting compositions UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 26 July 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 35016/72 Headings C1A and C1D [Also in Division C5] A gas generating candle comprises a segmented body of combustible material 2 which burns to produce a gaseous product and a porous slag, and a mass of exothermic igniter material 3 more readily ignited than the combustible material, the mass of exothermic material being located between at least some of the segments of the body of combustible material to hold them together and provide an increased burning surface, and igniting means 4 extending from the exterior of said candle to said exothermic igniter material. The exothermic material may be located in the combustible material as a plurality of individual layers, which layers are interconnected in a combustion transmitting manner (e.g. Fig. 2, not reproduced). An oxygen generating candle for use in a cutting torch contains combustible material having the following composition 86À5% NaClO 3 12À5% iron powder and 1% chopped fibre glass. The igniter material was formed of a composition consisting of 30% iron, 32% sodium chlorate, 26% aluminium oxide, 1% asbestos, 1% zinc oxide, 5% borax and 5% dextrin. |
