Flexible hoses are connected to branches or to in-line fittings by generating fusion joints between components which either comprise mutually compatible and partially vulcanised rubbers and plastics or include a compatible interfacial lining. Fusion may be generated by spiny welding or by axial oscillation. Where a lining is used as in a spigot/socket type joint, the outer dia. of the spigot is 0.5-1.02 mm less than the bore of the socket. The component surfaces may be ribbed to promote or control interfacial flow of fused matl. and may be activated by irradiation or chemical pretreatment. Process is suitable for mfg. tubing with branches of similar or different sizes e.g. automobile coolant circulation hoses, with joint section strengths >=5, pref. >=15 MN/m2. The fused joints require less critical conditions e.g. cleanliness and curing cycles than adhesive bonded joints and do not involve the mounting of ancillary clamps or clips. |
